Amongst the numerous famous places in Bali, Tanah Lot will always be in the top spot. Because the temple offers all of Bali’s charm – the natural and exotic beauty, the tradition, and the unique architecture.
The famous temple was built on the rock, more or less 300 meters from the beach line. Thus, you only can reach the place when the seawater recedes and climb up through the stone steps. While going up, you will notice the holes all along the rocks where black and white striped snakes take their residence. But the locals claimed that they are sacred creatures of the temple.
The History of the Off the Beach Temple
The first notable thing about Tanah Lot is that the temple is located off the land. The locals believed that this was due to the spiritual energy of Dang Hyang Nirartha, the Hindu messengers from Java to Bali.
The story by Dang Hyang Nirartha followed the holy light that came from the water. After following the light, he reached the Beraban Tabanan Village. Thus, he believed that the place was the best place to build a temple for the sea lords.
Although Bali’s emperor at the time, Raja Dalem Waturenggong, welcomed his cause, the village ruler opposed it. Bendesa Beraban Sakti, the ruler of the village, did not wish for Dang Hyang Nirartha to create any temple, because the ruler believed in monotheism.
But Dang Hyang Nirartha would not budge and started his meditation on top of a rock that was shaped like a parrot on the shore. Thus, Bendesa Baraban Sakti tried everything with all his might to stop Dang Hyang Nirartha from his meditation and chase him away. Then, while meditating Dang Hyang Nirartha moved the rock to the water to avoid the disturbance.
Due to that, Bendesa Baraban Sakti believed in Dang Hyang Nirartha and accepted Hindu learning, along with the villagers. Therefore, once Dang Hyang Nirartha finishes his meditation, he gives Bendesa Beraban Sakti a magical keris that can cure all plants’ diseases.
